rtf (it doesn't make a big difference, since Word opens both I'd recommend just sticking with rtf, since other programs can use that). It's worked almost perfectly for me, saving the files as either. They should then import perfectly into NWE. One thing you could do, and this is kind of a wonky work-around, is open your colleagues' files that are causing problems in NeoOfficeJ and then save them as RTF. I know this doesn't help you open your colleagues' files, but perfect compatibility is almost literally impossible (thanks to Microsoft's intentional ridiculousness).

has a more full implementation of the binary Word format, but they have lots of volunteer programmers reverse-engineering the crap-tastic layout format (though even they don't do a perfect job). This makes especially layout things tricky to keep right.

The Word document format is a kooky, undocumented, intentionally-obfuscated binary mess that changes with every release of Word, so that other apps can't keep up perfect compatibility. The fault here lies with Microsoft, not Nisus. The long and short of it is, can we expect to see better compatibility with Word in terms of reading Word docs and also in the creation/formatting of docs?

I didn't think that the formatting/style features needed for academic writing differed greatly from that of other professional and consumer-level writing needs.

I understand that NWE is not made specifically for academics. I recall fighting with it (crashes, spellcheck abnormalities etc) for HOURS and HOURS when I was working on my Masters. If the formatting is "off", the papers are unacceptable in a strict academic environment. Textedit even works better for some Word docs. I like NWE however I need an application that can read and create Word compatible docs to share with colleagues and professors. NeoofficeJ gets it's formatting of Word docs from OpenOffice. Formatting, including the location of page numbers, tables etc remains intact. Abi has the same difficulties opening certain Word docs as NWE. I've read that NWE gets it's word compatibility from AbiWord.

There will need to be some create workarounds on the Redlers' part to make a portable Mellel a reality, and personally I'd rather have their energies spent on adding features and refining Mellel.The beta and release version exhibit the same behavior. With a symbolic link, it will read the original preference file, but then overwrite the link with an actual file, killing the link to the original. With an alias, Mellel will simply overwrite the alias with a fresh default preference file. I just tried an experiment of using both aliases and symbolic links to store the actual preference file and application support folders in a different location than the standard. The OS X preference system makes it difficult to use workarounds. The inability to easily create a portable version of Mellel, though, is not necessarily because of the Redlers. (Also, I haven't seen anything in the Papyrus site that indicates it is able to be run from a portable drive and usable on multiple systems with a single license.)

This is a possibility, however, you would need a license for every computer that you run Mellel on. I think Papyrus-another small WP-can run off a flash drive or whatever.
